BIO

The Buffalo Hunt is an intimate and visceral portrait of one of the most extreme places in the Western Hemisphere- the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota. Directed by Philip Di Fiore, the film will be released via Amazon Prime on June 21, 2019.  The soundtrack for the film, composed by Jason Staehler Hill (David Fincher, The Killers), will be available digitally and on vinyl the same day. Ahead of release, The Buffalo Hunt will have a special press screening and lunch in New York City at the Roxy Theater on June 6 from 12pm-2pm. RSVP here.

Pine Ridge is a place where time ticks to unique rhythms and the day to day struggle for survival is etched deep into the rock formations and onto the faces of all living things.

The Buffalo Hunt is at once beautiful and desolate, tender and bawdy, funny and dark, poetic and realistic, grim and hopeful. All of the complexities of this enigmatic place dance together as ingredients in the communal soup that feed the Lakota. Sioux.

Thus far in 2019, The Buffalo Hunt, has been awarded Best Feature Length Documentary Prague Film Awards, Best Feature Length Documentary at the Canada International Film Festival, the Award of Excellence at the Utah Film Festival and is nominated for Best Cinematography at the Nice International Film Festival.

About the Soundtrack:

Taking inspiration from elemental forces, The Buffalo Hunt soundtrack plays a main role in the film. Like a great ambient record it mixes ideas of nature with the technology - the sonics of ARP synthesizers and heavy plate reverbs meld with the sounds of wind and insects. Itʼs a collage of studio detritus, distortions and abstractions that would easily be at home providing the score for a Science Fiction film.

Director Philip Di Fiore says, “When you visit a place like Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, you can almost feel and hear energy bubbling from under the ground and feel the presence of the spirits of the Lakota Sioux who died in the same hills hundreds of years ago. When we looked at our raw footage in the editing room, of course those feelings and sounds werenʼt there. So Jason and Ari were tasked with putting them back in. Their score is one of the main characters of the film”.
