Rebecca Foon is a cellist, composer, producer, and environmental activist whose multifaceted artistry bridges music, art and climate advocacy. Known for her immersive soundscapes and cinematic compositions, Foon has long explored the emotional terrain between fragility and resilience—both personal and on a planetary scale.
Her latest album, Black Butterflies, co-produced with Jace Lasek, marks her most dream pop-infused work to date. Recorded in her barn in the Laurentians, the album is a luminous, meditative journey featuring her sister and collaborator Aliayta Foon-Dancoes on violin, with Patrick Watson lending his voice and piano. Bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Andrew Barr, beat maker Sankara Atsilut, and Jace Lasek complete the ensemble, bringing rhythmic depth to this intimate, atmospheric recording.
Foon is a founding member of the multi–Juno Award-winning ensemble Esmerine and has released a diverse body of solo work under her name and the moniker Saltland. She was a member of Silver Mt. Zion and Set Fire to Flames and scores for film, installation, and performance—including collaborations with artists such as Sam Green, Colin Stetson, Patti and Jesse Smith, reflecting her capacity to create music that resonates across disciplines.
A passionate environmentalist, Foon is co-founder of the climate action organization Pathway to Paris along with Jesse Paris Smith and rainforest conservation group Junglekeepers. She has spoken at the United Nations and co-produced global events with Jesse Paris Smith for Pathway to Paris with artists and activists including Patti Smith, Thom Yorke, Flea, Joan Baez, Arundhati Roy, and Vandana Shiva. Her advocacy is mirrored in her art: large-scale illuminated lightboxes and photographs capturing protected ecosystems serve as portals into the sacred and endangered beauty of our world.
Whether through music, art or community action, Rebecca Foon continues to create with deep intention—an artist whose work embodies the belief that collective action can inspire bold change.
